Wedding makeup for hooded eyes (how to lift and enhance them)

Hooded eyes are one of the most common eye shapes - and they’re beautiful.

But when it comes to bridal makeup, they do benefit from slightly different placement and technique. The goal isn’t to change your eyes. It’s to enhance them in a way that feels lifted, bright and softly defined.

Here’s how I approach wedding makeup for hooded eyes.

What are hooded eyes?

Hooded eyes have a fold of skin that sits over the natural crease, which can partially hide the eyelid when your eyes are open.

This simply means:

  • Traditional eyeshadow placement may disappear when the eyes are open

  • Thick liner can close the eye shape

  • Heavy lashes can feel overwhelming

With the right technique, though, hooded eyes photograph beautifully.

Strategic shadow placement makes all the difference

For hooded eyes, placement is everything.

Rather than placing colour directly into the natural crease, I blend slightly above it - softly diffusing shadow upward and outward. This creates the illusion of more lid space and a gentle lift.

It’s subtle.
It’s refined.
And it makes a visible difference in photos.

Definition without harsh lines

Heavy liner often disappears or transfers on hooded eyes.

Instead, I focus on:

  • Soft lash-line definition

  • Rich brown, charcoal or bronze tones

  • Gentle smudging for lift

This enhances shape without closing the eyes off.

A touch of light-reflective shadow on the centre of the lid or inner corner also helps open and brighten the eye area beautifully.

Lashes that lift, not weigh down

Full strip lashes can sometimes sit too heavily on hooded eyes.

That’s why I typically use:

  • Individual lashes

  • Light cluster lashes

  • A lifted, winged placement

This creates a fluttery effect that enhances your natural shape without feeling dense or overpowering.

You’ll still look like you - just softly elevated.

Why your preview session matters

If you have hooded eyes and feel unsure about what suits you, your preview session is where we refine everything.

We’ll:

  • Adjust placement

  • Test lash styles

  • Take photos in different lighting

  • Make small tweaks until it feels right

Bridal makeup can look slightly more defined than everyday makeup at first - but once you see it in photos, it makes complete sense.

In summary

Hooded eyes don’t need correcting - they need thoughtful placement.

With the right techniques, your eyes will look:

Lifted.
Open.

Softly defined.
Photograph-ready.

If you’re planning your wedding and want bridal makeup that enhances your features rather than overpowering them, I’d love to talk through your vision.
